October 12th is Hispanic Day

Spain Flag

Every year, Hispanic Day is celebrated on October 12th. It is a national holiday in Spain (combined with the day of the Armed Forces) and commemorates the exact date when Christopher Columbus reached the Americas (Bahamas) in 1492.

On this day in Spain, the King of Spain oversees the raising of the Spanish national flag in the center of Madrid. The king and the prime minister then lead a military parade of a multitude of military representatives and vehicles, along with planes performing acrobatics with yellow and red smoke above the parade.

NYC has held a parade on this day since 1985. More than 10,000 participate and over 1,000,000 spectators gather each year on 5th Avenue!
